Senior Citizen Project

This project was to make senior people look younger , this first image is my edited version. I made two layers of them then I redused the opacity of the secondlayer and then removed the wrinkles on it, this is to reduce the age look while maintaning  a realistic look. This picture was already really edited, so any changes I hade do, had to be drastic for the sake of this project, to make the males hair colored, I found a guys hairstyle and shaped it to fit his hair then I made it an overlay to make it more realistic. To make the lady's hair blond I mixed with lighting, and the tone.

Reference shots (Cindy Sherman)

One of the shot from my shot plan was, a fashest leader on a podium in the rain, a very dark/formal shot type and I was going for a creepy look to it like this shot above.

Journal VII (7)

In both of these images I was really focusing on texture. For example the shiny/smoothness of the sunglasses on the mat black surface of my binder.

Cindy Sherman Pictures

"res ad triarios venit"
Going to the Triarii.

Triarii were the elite military of the early Roman reform, they were the last line of Rome, which in turn inspired the quote res ad triarios venit, which means Going to the Triarii. The quote it's self means Going to the bitter end, which is why I tought this would be a fitting title.

I chose to take this shot because I have always been inspired by the early Roman Empire and I like strategy and battle tactics so I found this would be a great shot for me to take. I took this shot in my Opa's barn, there was a big window behind "me" (the camera). I took this shot using a tripod and a remote, before the shot was taken I would drop the remote on the ground before it fired.

Historical accuracy's
The coins on the table were actually replica Roman Denarii, that were dated to the time of the map (3rd Century). The Romans also used a compass tool on my right. The Shield has a special design on it, the arrows (lightning) represents the shocking speed of the Roman army the lines on its sides mean there is always a bigger wave (line of troops), and the wings represent the flourishment of Rome. There is also the Roman flag behind me which you can only partually see.  The Gladius on my side was located on  my right side, in midevil movies you see knights take out their sword from their left side if they are right handed, however the Romans took their sword out from their right side if they were left or right handed because it was much safer to the people around them.

Me

Odyssey

I chose to take a shot of myself wearing my aviators because I am always out in the world. I like to explore, and see the world. I am standing outside of my house, because I dont let people hold me back but I also like going home too. This shot was taken by my Dad, it was an overcast day so the ambiant lighting was quite blue.
This is a fairly straight forward shot of my self.

Born into brothles responce

Part A - Answer the following questions:

1.What did Zana describe as the reason for giving the cameras to the children in the beginning of the
documentary, i.e.: why didn't she just take the photographs herself?
    • Zana felt that it would “be great to see the world from their eyes.”

2.Why is the photographer's point of view or unique voice part of what we consider when we talk about pictures? Can't we simply judge all pictures by the same criteria of good and bad regardless of who took them?

    • The photographers point of view is a unique part of what we consider when we talk about art because the photographer is the viewer, in that the viewers are looking through the eyes of the photographer.

3. Reflect on what Avijit first says about painting: “I like to draw pictures because I want to express
what’s on my mind…I want to put my thoughts into colors.” What does this tell us about him?
    • Avijit's quote tells us that he is creative and he feels he can make a point on how trapped him and his friends are, this also expresses his love for art.

4. Throughout this lesson, the term ‘personal expression’ is used to refer to art, sports, writing, and
other activities. How would you define personal expression? How are photography, painting and writing forms of personal expression?
    • the term personal expression means to express ones self in a form of presentation where people have the option to view “to express ones self.” Photography , painting and writing are all forms of personal expression in that they all convey a message to the viewer.

  1. How can art (personal expression) serve as a means of educating others about a particular issue?

    • Art can educate people on a matter by showing them what it is like in a specific situation. But although art and photography can educate viewers on cirtian matters, it can also deceive in that, people can convey a false message for personal gain. Example: propaganda, advertisements etc...

Part B- Critique

In the first critique I had you complete I encouraged you to only look at the physical qualities of the
pictures. This time I would like you to do a TWO part critique.

Visit this Kids with Cameras Gallery and look at the pictures, notice the links at the bottom of the page
are for locations other than India where this project has taken place.

i) Select what you believe are the 2 most beautiful images based on traditional photography standards
(Nice contrast, appealing colours and textures, clear focal point etc...) And in a sentence for each
explain why you like them.

Zana “group shot”

This is a good shot, by traditional standards, it has a good clear ISO, not too much background noise, it is a group shot there for its focal point is quite large and a little less clear then one which is meant to have a clear focal point.

Samaan W., 11  "As Before"

This image is a great image in that its focal point is solid and crisp. It also uses the rule of thirds to make a very interesting shot which is also pleasing to the eye. It has a fairly good ISO, although it might just be the ground but I feel the ISO could be turned down a bit.

ii) Select what you believe to be the most effective pictures at conveying a message or educating you about the issue of human rights abuses. And in a sentence for each explain why you chose them.

Samaan W., 11  "As Before"

Again this is a great image in which it conveys a sad message, in that you see this woman sitting gazing off into oblivion, looking lost and almost sad. You also see all the garbage and how this persons life is like. That is what makes this an effective shot.

Kochi, 10  "Up the Stairs"
This image is effective because you see this skinny boy going up these stairs carrying a bucket and it makes you wonder where he is going, what is next, and what will happen to him. That makes this and effective human rights photo.

iii) Does a picture need to be beautiful to be effective? Does it help?
A picture does not need to be beautiful to be effective or you would never get a message across. That being said, it does help to have a beautiful image.

Light Art Assignment

This Shot was taken in my basment.
To get this shot I got my Dad to wave a flash light with a
red plastic bage over it for colour and I
took a 15 second exposure of him and then turned on the light.

Journal Entry Three

In this assignment our task was to get four diffrent shudder speed shot types
-one action shot
-one panning shot
-one strobe shot
-one light painting shot

 Action shot

To get a shot like this you need a very short exposure speed
and a high iso setting so you can easily freeze the moment.

Panning shot

This is a panning shot where your target is in "focus" but the back ground
is blurry. A shot like this requires a 1/2 - 3 second exposure
and you to move the camera with your target to get
them in focus and you background blurry.

Strob Photography

To get a shot like this you need a dark room a flashing light source
and a subject to shoot. As your subject moves it gets frozen in place.
It requires a longer exposure.

Light Painting

Light painting is where you take a ligt source and
take a long exposure shot of the light moving.
So it captures all the movment of your light source forming
the "shape" of what what you drew.

Journal Entry Two

Pin hole Camera Shots
old
This is a slightly edited version of my original image. This one is now up right and its colours are now inverted back to black and white. I had to invert the colours because the light sensitive paper creates a negative image, so I simply put it back to "normal" in this shot.

I took several shots but this was the only shot I had to work with. The first two shots were under exposed and the third had some form of light leak. This image was the fourth shot I took. The shutter was open for three minutes exactly. It was taken on the forth floor at Grimsby Secondary School. The big black spot in the center, I am guessing, was a drip of developer.

Pin hole camera shot Improved

This is my improved shot, it is the same shot as the above, but I adjusted the lighting, improved the sides from the scan, got rid of fragments and a stain from the paper clip from drying the image, and of course, got rid of the big blotch in the center.

Journal One

Journal entry one

10/02/2013         2:14pm

Last Sunday my Dad and I went hiking, on the Bruce Trail in Grimsby. It was a gorgeous day and the second day after our first blizzard of the year. The snow was still fresh, deep and untouched so our objective was to capture some of the pillows of snow on the frozen river. The wind had not yet taken the snow off of the trees so we took lots of shots of the still forest. We encountered many small animal tracks which gave us intriguing clues to their secret lives.

Geting to know your style - assignment #1

Long Exposure Sunset - By: Dave Fallis
This is a photograph of a sunset. The photograph is divided essentially in half. The top half contains silhouetted mountains against a cloudy sunset. The bottom half contains a very smooth layer of water. This photograph is really effective in its use of layers. The dark blue clouds in the sky draw your eye to the colliding mountains and sun at the vanishing point. At the vanishing point you see the most colours. The majority of the photograph is deep blue, but at the vanishing point you have pinks and yellows. I really like this photograph because the long exposure creates a very soft textured photo which has a calming effect. I also like the fact that you can only see the outline of the shapes of the trees and cannot actually see any trees or vegetation.

Pre-Sunrise reflection - Dave Fallis

I like this photograph because it is a landscape shot. The most interesting part of this photograph is that it appears upside down, but in actuality it is just a reflection in the water. The mist looks like wispy clouds while the clouds look like waves.

This is a very effective photograph because the eye is immediately drawn towards the deep fog at the top of the photo then your eye takes you down to another layer, briefly  to the silhouetted black trees. I also like the layering in this photo because the clouds behind the tree layer gives it an interesting and subtle effect.

Dead Trees - Dave Fallis

In contrast to the other two photographs, this photo is a black and white image, and is very sharp in feeling. This gives it a dreary affect which makes it a lot bleaker compared to the above photos. Like the first photo, this photo is also divided essentially in half. The top half depicts dead trees in sharp focus causing a spear-like effect. The lower layer shows the trees reflected in almost completely still water. The flatness of the water brings out the trees making them more spear-like than the top layer.
